Colors can add or subtract to a home’s value. The right ones can sell a home for a good price faster than you expect. Wrong paint colors, on the other hand, can lower the value of a home in the eyes of critical buyers. They can make a home languish in the market far longer than usual.
Here are colors that raise the value of your home for sale and help you avoid costly mistakes. This is based on real estate site Zillow’s recent research on 1,300 potential home buyers in the US.
Light blue for bathrooms
Buyers are willing to shell out 16% more for light blue bathrooms. This translates to around $5,000 added value. Zillow also found that a bathroom with blue walls is calming and conceals stains better than white.
Dark blue for bedrooms
Bedrooms are for relaxing and sleeping after a long, hard day. That’s why blue and its soothing, calming presence is the color of choice for bedrooms. The Zillow study showed that 9 out of 10 buyers go for dark blue bedrooms which can raise home value by as much as $1,500. Another study showed that blue makes a room appear bigger.
Black and navy blue for the main door
These colors could raise home value by 2.9 % and sell your home for as much as $6,000 more. Front doors in black or navy blue create a strong impression on buyers.
Slate blue for dining rooms
Dining rooms in this shade of blue sold a whopping $2,000 more than their differently colored counterparts.
Gray
Home sellers can’t go wrong with a light gray living room. This soothing, welcoming hue invites guests to lounge and feel at home. Gray is also ideal for high traffic areas. It blends with all kinds of furniture and a wide range of interiors. Light gray in living rooms means an additional $500 in home value, a $200 increase in offer price.
Buyers stay away from living rooms painted in bright, bold and daring colors.
Greige for exterior walls
Curb appeal is important because it leaves a good first impression. Greige (gray and beige) exterior walls add to curb appeal and increase home values by $1,526.
Light pastels
These colors, like pale pink, peach, and mauve, add drama without overwhelming. A dash of pale silvery blue or green brings character to a room while being gentle enough to exude warmth and comfort.
White
This classic color is timeless. Its appeal lies in its clean, sleek look. Shades of white for the exterior of the house attract because buyers want to fill in a blank space with their signature touches through landscaping, a unique door or window color, and others. White walls let the buyer envision the kind and style of furniture, artwork, and fabrics they can use in the home.
When it comes to interiors, creamy off-white makes an area feel cozy and adaptable. It lends sophistication to a room and creates a warm background for furnishings and accessories.
The kitchen is often the social hub of the house. Which is one reason it’s especially important to buyers and homeowners alike. That’s why the right kitchen color matters. Zillow says white kitchens add $600 to the value of a home. It gives a clean, crisp vibe and reflects natural light as well. It also makes the kitchen look bigger and more inviting.
Neutral
White, light gray, taupe, beige, and greige (gray-beige) blend with almost anything. Muted, contrasting shades on the trim or window panes add to the architectural elements’ appeal and enhance the way a home’s exterior appears for buyers. This, in turn, helps sell the home faster.
Velvety beige
Speaking of neutrals, beige blends with all designs. Those with a hint of gray adds depth and dimension to floor plans while working well with various wood tones.
Other pointers
The kind of neighborhood sometimes dictates what colors add value to the home. Coastal hues like white, gray, and blue are popular in the South. Neutrals are trending in the Midwest, while the West Coast goes for rich shades of green and gray plus deep reds and golds.
A home’s architectural style also determines which color boosts market value. Victorian homes are best painted in Victorian colors like Prussian blue, bottle green, and azure with a touch of black.
