The annals of city history trace West Palm Beach’s official birth date to November 5, 1894– the day of its incorporation as a town. But a deeper look into records show that West Palm Beach was settled as early as 5,000 years ago.
Several Native American tribes, which included the Jaegas, lived in the area and made contact with Spanish explorers sometime in the early 16th century. The region, and the rest of Florida, was plunged into a constant state of tug-of-war between European settlers and Native Americans, until only a few Seminoles remained in the area in the 19th century. In that same century, Lake Worth County– West Palm Beach’s first ancestor– was founded around 1884 by a diverse group of settlers.
By 1890, their population grew to over 200 residents. It was not long after the settlement gained the attention of Standard Oil founder Henry Flagler, who envisioned the development of the entire Palm Beach County into a sophisticated winter escape. He soon purchased Lake Worth County and platted it as West Palm Beach in 1893. A year later, West Palm Beach was incorporated into a town.
Originally, West Palm Beach was envisioned as a commercial and agricultural center, with vast tracts of ranchland dominating the landscape. However, as the railway brought in more settlers and investors, the potential for growth became evident. The development of infrastructure, including roadways and utilities, laid the foundation for West Palm Beach’s future prosperity. It eventually achieved cityhood in 1903.

Third was the post-war boom and the invention of air-conditioning, which dramatically improved living conditions in West Palm Beach during the hot summer months. West Palm Beach slowly progressed from a winter resort community into a place one can live year-round. As a result, more northerners relocated to the city and further fueled West Palm Beach’s population and economic growth.
